If you've never played Mass Effect before, make sure to get Mass Effect 1 as well! A lot of people skip 1, for some reason.
Also, the DLC is not needed, but greatly enhances the story. Arrival bridges the big jump between 2 and 3, and explains how Shepard ends up in jail.
