A woman walked in to a California police station on Wednesday and claimed she is Jaycee Lee Dugard, the 11-year-old kidnapped outside her South Lake Tahoe home in 1991.
Lt Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department said, “We’re 99 percent sure it’s her.” He added that DNA tests were being conducted.
According to Lovell, who was a detective assigned to help investigate the kidnapping in 1991, “Her family has been contacted and they are in the process of arranging a meeting. We are very confident at this point in time that it is her.”
In a news release on Thursday, the sheriff’s department said that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather, Carl Probyn, was watching on June 10, 1991.
Two people are in custody in connection with the case, Lovell said.
