Yes, you can use Opera as instant messenger client. This is possible over a irc server:

You can also use this service with a normal irc client.

Basically you have to join irc://im.bitlbee.org and type in:
account add <protocol, MSN for example or Twitter> <ID, 123@hotmail for example> <password>
Add user: account add <account ID> <user>
offline message: username: message
To store your login information register on the irc server.
In my opinion it sounds very interesting. If I have time I will experiment with it and set up an own server (because I don't trust them enough). And maybe I will use it as replacement for usual
clients (Trillian, Miranda, ..) if Iam pleased. Opera is the only app we need.
