EMAS (Engineered Materials Arresting System) is a special type of concrete at the end of runways designed to stop airplanes when they're running out of runway.

Why a special type of concrete? Wouldn't just dirt have the same effect?

No clue, but wiki says:

An EMAS is similar in concept to the runaway truck ramp made of gravel or sand.

Too bad there isn't a real comparison. I'm guessing the EMAS materials are a lot better at absorbing the weight.
