Take-Two are banning GTA V offline modding

Take-Two made a risky move today by sending a formal cease-and-desist letter to a popular GTA V/IV modding tool ‘OpenIV’.

OpenIV stated this on twitter:

There must be a reason, right? Is the modding tool been used as malware or authentication bypassing? Let’s find out!

For almost ten years of OpenIV development, we had tried to play as nice as possible and even more:

Strictly following of Civil Code of Russia (only reverse engineering for interoperability).
        Only clean-room reverse engineering.
No distribution of original data and code.
And absolutely no messing with Online…

So, OpenIV claim to have not done anything wrong. 10 years is a long time to be around, so surely they’ve been fine.

Here is an official statement from OpenIV’s lead developer, GooD-NTS.

Quote
On June 5th, 2017, we had received an official Cease-and-Desist letter.
It clearly says, that with OpenIV we “allow third parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation Take-Two’s rights“.
Yes, this letter is illiterate both technically and grammatically (really, they don’t even bother with proof-reading the text).

Basically, a half-assed letter attempting to shut down OpenIV due to security breaches, essentially.

Not only is this an attack on OpenIV, but an attack on GTA V Modding in general. According to OpenIV, this means that modding activity is essentially illegal now.

As of now, Take-Two haven’t made an official statement on modding which can be used in court, so basically the cease-and-desist is uncalled for and a war on modding.

Steam reviews have dropped to Overwhelmingly Negative.
At this rate, GTAVI will have to cure cancer to restore the people's trust in T2.
